How to save money on your pet's medicine

Save money when buying your pet's medicine

Prescription medicines can be pricey. Especially if it’s something your pet needs long term. But there are ways to save some money on your pet’s prescription medicine. Here are our top tips.

Buy online

All vets are now legally obliged to give you the option of buying your pet’s prescription medicine online. Just ask your vet when you next see them. But make sure the site you use is a member of the Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS) – that way you know you’re buying from a reputable provider.

Get a six month prescription

You have to pay a charge for each prescription. So it’s worth getting six months of cover from your vet. That means that if your pet needs some more medicine over the next six months, you won’t have to pay the prescription charge again.

Check the active ingredients

If you really want to save money, take a look at  - or ask your vet for - the prescription medicine’s active ingredients. You may be able to use a cheaper brand that contains the same ingredients.

But be safe

There’s a reason medicines require a prescription. Many drugs come with a risk of side effects, and your pet should be monitored closely to make sure they don’t suffer any problems. So make sure your pet is checked regularly by a vet.
