Scalibor Collar for Dogs: Notes from our vet
Going on holiday is usually taken up with thinking about passports, travel plans and your new summer wardrobe. But if you are planning on bringing your dog then it’s worth taking a few minutes to think about what they might need too.
A Scalibor collar protects your pet from ticks and sand-flies which are common in many countries and can carry nasty bacterial infections such as Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis and Leishmani. These can be very serious if left untreated. As we don’t have these diseases in the UK our pets don’t have any immunity to them so are more at risk of picking up an infection. Treated with a special insecticide the collar is easy to fit and will work for up to 6 months. You should put it on your pet about a week before you set off on holiday.
Lymes disease can be very difficult to diagnose especially as the symptoms may not appear until months after your dog has been bitten by a tick. It’s much better to be safe than sorry and use the collar to stop your dog from getting ticks in the first place.
The Scalibor collar is water resistant so will still work even if your pet decides to go for a swim, making it more effective than spot-on treatments. It comes in different sizes to fit both small and larger dogs.
You should not use the collar on cats or any other pets. If you do suspect your pet has a tick or has been bitten then you should ask your vet for advice. Knowing your dog will be safe from bites will let you get on with enjoying your holiday.

Use regularly for about 6 years when we take the dogs to France to protect against ticks and sand flies.
Scalibor collar so far is excellent I have only been using it for 2 weeks so will update again in the future. What I really like is it can be cut to size as my girl dog is slightly smaller than my big dog so being able to trim it so it does not iratate her is excellent, it is also lightweight and the dogs are happy and had no allergic reaction or side affects. Excellent product thank you **
