Protexin Denamarin: Notes from our vet
Liver disease is a serious condition, particularly common in older cats or dogs. The liver is a vital organ and if your pet suffers from chronic liver problems then your vet may well have prescribed Protexin Denamarin to help keep it working properly.
Denamarin contains an important naturally occurring substance called SAMe which is normally produced by the liver. SAMe plays a major role in preventing damage to liver cells and stopping the build-up of toxic bile.
Pets with liver disease may not have enough SAMe in their bodies so it’s very important to add it to their diet.
The absorption of SAMe into your pet’s body is affected by food so you should give Denamarin tablets to your cat or dog when they have an empty stomach and at least 1 hour before feeding them.
SAMe may cause irritation of the oesophagus especially in cats so make sure you give your pet a teaspoon of water after the tablet to help them swallow it. You can use tuna water or another liquid that your cat likes but do not use milk. Giving your pet Protexin Denamarin will make sure their liver gets as much help as possible to keep doing its important work.
