Cystophan for Cats
Cystophan helps to support and preserve the protective glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer of the bladder.
Normal healthy bladders have a layer of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) coating them. This layer protects the bladder from direct exposure to urine. Urine activates sensory nerve fibres which the brain perceives as uncomfortable..
Cystophan capsules can be given whole or opened, and the palatable contents sprinkled onto food.
Protexin Cystophan for cats should be administered for as long as deemed necessary.

Royal Canin Feline Urinary S/O is a complete dietetic feed for cats. Its urine acidifying properties and its low level of magnesium making it suitable for dissolving struvite stones and reducing their recurrence.
Royal Canin Urinary is also formulated for the nutritional management and support of cats with lower urinary tract disease and cases of recurrent idiopathic cystitis.
Key benefits
o Struvite dissolution - Effectively dissolves struvite stones.
o Urine dilution - Diluting urine decreases the urinary concentration of struvites and calcium oxalates. The larger urinary volume also helps to ensure regular bladder wash-out.
o Bladder support - Glycosaminoglycans (GAG) that are naturally found on the healthy bladder mucosa but decrease in diopathic cystitis. This causes increased permeability of the bladder to bacteria, toxins and ions, resulting in bladder inflammation and stimulation of pain-sensitive receptors.
Royal Canin Feline Urinary: Notes from our vet
Cats are very prone to bladder problems such as cystitis. This can be painful for them and they may seem restless, stop eating and not want to play. Any cat can be affected but the disease is more common in overweight, male, neutered indoor cats.
If you notice your cat starts finding it difficult to urinate, isn’t using their litter tray as usual or is grooming themselves more often then they may have bladder problems. Some cats will develop cystitis as a result of stones forming in their bladder.
Diet can play a key role in treating bladder problems. Royal Canin Feline Urinary Diets are specially designed to be low in the minerals that cause bladder stones. They also help dilute your pet’s urine, stopping crystals forming and so reducing the chances of stones. In certain cases the feed’s mineral ingredients can help dissolve existing stones, saving your cat from having to go through surgery.
The feed comes in wet or dry forms so you can choose the best variety for your pet, although the wet form is recommended as it will help your cat consume more water which is important to combat bladder problems. There’s also a low calorie option for cats who are prone to putting on weight.
This diet is not meant to be fed long term and you shouldn’t give it to cats who also have kidney disease. Always check with a vet before giving it to your pet.
Making sure your cat gets the right diet can help ease the pain of cystitis and prevent more problems in the future, putting your pet back on the road to health.
